Alligator Indian - Corpsing
I ain't scared of too much, but my time in freeform radio taught me that "jangly pop" (or really any modifier added to pop) and "audio collage" are terms not to be trusted. It's not that they're entirely meaningless. Audio collages are definitely a thing, just rarely executed in a way I enjoy. I adore pop, but those modifiers, man. They rarely promise songs with an easily identified structure. Don't get me wrong, I don't need my jamz to be safe, but I tend not to like music that's overly clever or indulgent. It's the protestant in me, I guess.
That said, Orlando's Alligator Indian gets it right with Corpsing... and this is also not really what I would call an audio collage. Anyway, the structure here is pop enough but it's executed with a dark disco twist. And if you know me, you know I adore dark disco. Going through their other offerings, I am not sure where Alligator Indian is in its development. From Melbourne, Florida (a town I am actually very familiar with), to Orlando, to Asheville, North Carolina, their voice and style has changed dramatically with each release. I'm curious to hear what they'll come up with next, but also hope that they will not drown in the self righteous obscurity that makes up the Asheville music scene.
