Beck - Wave
It's weird what happens when you leave something unremarkable alone and then come back it to realize that you really underestimated its power. Despite my efforts to avoid contributing in any way to Scientology, I don't know if I'll ever be able to abandon Beck. This came on yesterday during an otherwise energetic afternoon cleaning up my apartment, and I had actually forgotten who the artist was. Talk about an arresting piece of music, from beginning to end, I had to sit down and let it wash over me.
"Is that you, Beck?! Are you ok?!"
The lyrics are simple:
I move away from this place
In the form of a disturbance
And enter into the world
Like some tiny distortion
If I surrdender
And I don't fight this wave
I will not go under
I'll only get carried away
Wave
Isolation
Around 2:13, the strings take over, Beck has given up, and one can easily imagine his final drift out to sea. He presented to us his problem, and shares with us the path he's taking for his solution. Maybe that's what's so moving here; you know someone or a part of yourself that relates completely to the sentiment. The farther you let yourself drift, the more inexorable your isolation seems.
Lesson learned: don't let depressed friends go swimming alone.
