Mac Demarco - Let Her Go
Well, it turns out working at a law firm doesn't leave you with a ton of time on your hands to write about music just for funsies. Though my life the past month has actually revolved entirely around music ... it has been the industry side of things. Which is a bit of a different experience.
Anyway, the irony of living a life that starts at 5:40 AM and includes ~ 1.5 hours driving on Pacfiic Coast Highway is that the jams you have are what get you through it.
Enter Mac Demarco.
I'm not sure if anything is going to beat this release for me this year. Every single track stands on its own, and though Salad Days absolutely tips its hat to the 70's, Demarco is not overly nostalgic or gimmicky. This is the perfect album to play with your windows down through Malibu's June gloom.
I guess what gets me is how self assured, but not cocky, this twenty-four-year-old Canadian dude is. He tends to keep his guitar lines sweet and melodic but his lyrics are just sharp enough.
It is very, very rare when I will say that if you like this track, go ahead and listen to the entire album. There isn't a bud in the whole lot.
