Sisyphus - Booty Call
Oh, man. Maybe it's not news to you that, in 2012, Sufjan Stevens, Son Lux, and Serengeti got together to release Beak & Claw under s / s / s. Now, they're back as Sisyphus (note that the three 'S's remain).
Who was that, again? Sisyphus was the mythological Greek king who had to roll a boulder up a hill only to watch it roll back down, all into perpetuity. The new name is without a doubt easier to pronounce, which I'd imagine Sufjan is sensitive to.
Well, this eponymous release was produced in three weeks, and in some ways, that's evident. It's not that it's sloppy or foul in any way. By all means, check out the entire release. But I do wish that they had let some of these tracks sit a little bit before releasing this.
Here's why: this is so clean and sexy, and because of that, I am completely willing them to take it up a notch by the end. Instead, they let it die, and really aren't adding any new elements from beginning to end. Maybe I'd let that go --- the same can be said for Blurred Lines --- but at least let the song linger out to beyond the three minute mark! And that ending?! What a let-down. That might be intentional, given the subject matter.
The lyrics are so much better than your average come hither song:
Stop
Why you acting all defeated?
Did you put your heart in a boy who beat it?
While I take the day to ponder what it means to be kissed "like a bubble in the brooks," I'll also celebrate that here we have a song that has hooks and wit. I'll try not to be too disappointed that nothing else from this album takes it to a higher level. I am confident that interesting remixes are soon to come. Don't let me down, DJs.
